Background
Since the beginning of its operation in 1960 Ballestra S.p.A. focused on the design and supply of modern, efficient and easy-to-operate production plants for sulphonation and detergent production, at that time still using old technology and scarcely efficient production methods.
One of the first innovations introduced by Ballestra was the use of gaseous SO3 in place of oleum as a sulphonation agent and the optimisation of the continuous sulphonation process for production of anionic surfactants, reaching yield and product quality never achieved before.
Through continuous technological development, Ballestra has been progressively building up and consolidating its leading role in the design and supply of plants for surfactants and powder detergent production.
Over 1.800 Ballestra plants are spread over 120 countries and have been contributing a substantial percentage of the worldwide surfactants and detergent production, making Ballestra's name a landmark in the supply of technologies for the Surfactant and Detergent Industry, having supplied sulphonation plants up to 150,000 T/Year capacity and spray drying towers up to 250,000 T/Year capacity.
During its 45 years of operation, Ballestra has also designed and supplied many plants for the organic and inorganic chemical industry, widening its activities. Many plants requiring investments of over 100 millions € have been successfully supplied and started up, most of them connected to the surfactant, detergent and oleochemical industry.The recent integration of Ballestra in the Desmet Ballestra Group has substantially enhanced the Ballestra presence in the world markets and its capability to offer cost competitive plants with a strong local management support, close to the customers.
